Linda Mellor (43) is The Founder
of The British Second Wives Club (The BSWC), which began offering
support and friendship to
Second Wives in Britain in
March 2005. Linda lives in Cumbria
with her husband Richard and their
 three
Airedale Terriers.
Linda was born and educated in Scotland then moved to London in her
early twenties and built a successful career in Recruitment, and
latterly, Head Hunting. She
escaped London to live rurally in Devon
and is now settled in Cumbria.
Linda is a professional photographer, she enjoys walking, drawing,
exploring the countryside, theatre and is actively involved in
the rescue of Airedale Terriers. The BSWC is the main focus of her time
and she spends hours each day promoting The BSWC and raising the profile
of second wives in Britain and the problems they face.
Linda says "When I met my husband to be in 2001, he was recently
separated and living in a rented room
in Bristol. His divorce was a very
long drawn out affair and he faced many problems, many
of them connected with child contact.

- I supported him through the
divorce and countless Court hearings and, although it had nothing to do
with me (or so I thought), I began to be dragged
into it all. I fully
understand what it is like being the partner of a man who has been married
before. You meet a man, you fall in love and suddenly you're dragged into
the middle of stressful and acrimonious exchanges when one of the parties
is demanding to know everything about your life, your finances and even
the value of the car you drive.

- I now understand how a second
wife can be driven to distraction by his jealous ex, who is unable to get
over him and to move on with her life.
You find yourself asking the same questions, over and over again: she
wanted a divorce, she has a new lover, so why does she have a problem with
him getting on with his life? Why can't she accept the marriage is over
when she was the one who ended it by having an affair? Why
is she deliberately trying
to cut him out of the children's lives?"
Linda searched for support hoping to find other women who have had similar
experiences but she couldn't find anything to help.

- Linda says "I realised I
couldn't be the only woman living with a man who has been married before
but there was no support available anywhere. I went from looking for
support for myself, to wanting to help others who are in the same
situation".
On March 1st 2005, Linda launched The British Second Wives Club and
immediately hit the headlines thanks to the very high profile April
Wedding of Prince Charles to his second wife Camilla. The BSWC has grown
steadily since its launch, offering its Members a supportive and
understanding environment to discuss and share their experiences of living
with a man who has been married before.
Linda says "On finding The BSWC, so many women expressed how relieved
they felt and how they took so much comfort in knowing they are not alone
and The BSWC is here to help and support them. There are so many elements
to being a second wife and in The British Second Wives Club we understand
them all, because we are all second wives".
